The Hanging Gate is situated in the tiny Lancashire hamlet of Audenshaw and is surely the jewel in the Lancashire crown. Generally acknowledged as being the oldest pub in England it has a history as rich as it is unbelievable. Many famous names throughout history have stopped off at The Gate at one time or another to quench their thirst from King Charles 1st right the way through to The Beatles, Ernest Hemingway and that girl with the big knockers on the jam commercial!
The `appenin` Gate (as it is known locally) is the only pub still standing that is mentioned in The Doomsday book and the only one to survive The Great Fire of London being, as it was, 180 Miles away at the time.
There aren`t many pubs that can claim to have been name checked in as many songs either, from Sinatra (` My kind of pub` ) to The Beatles ( Baby you can drive my car……to the pub ) and it was here, it is said, that a thirsty John Lennon, suffering from writers block found inspiration and wrote the lyrics to Working Class Hero on the back of a beer mat! Eagle eyed viewers may also recognize The Gate from TVs Most Haunted where Derek Acorah summoned up the spirit of the late Marilyn Monroe.
